What is an IPTV System?

Not sure what an IPTV system is? Wondering whether or not you could benefit from installing IPTV
solutions for your business?

Here’s your chance to clear your doubts.

IPTV Explained

First of all, you might be asking yourself just what IPTV stands for; Internet Protocol Television or
IPTV is a relatively modern way of delivering TV content to the end user(s). As the name suggests,
the mode of delivery involved is based on the internet (while older TV delivery systems rely on
terrestrial, cable or satellite communication methods instead).

The Perks of an IPTV System

When you watch content on an IPTV system, you can enjoy many perks that you don’t normally get to
enjoy with traditional TV content. What do we mean by perks?

1. Enjoy Replays

When you watch cable TV, for example, if you miss part of a show, it’s gone. You’ll have to wait until a
scheduled repeat of the program airs again to catch up (which in some cases, never happens). With
IPTV, that problem isn’t there. Just like if you were watching a videotape, you’ll be able to rewind or
replay video content however many times you want, and at any point of the video that you want. This
puts IPTV’s content miles ahead of the more traditional TV content in terms of convenience.

2. Access to Video on Demand (VoD)

Another perk is being able to enjoy Video on Demand (VoD). By offering VoD, IPTV solutions put the
viewer in charge. Not sure what VoD refers to?

Just think of content on YouTube and Netflix. These are examples of VoD – viewers can select what
content to watch and when. This puts them in complete control. In contrast, with more traditional
forms of TV such as cable, viewers have video content broadcasted to them according to a pre-
defined schedule; therefore, they have limited control over what they can watch. The only choice
viewers have is whether to watch a particular TV channel at a particular moment in time or not. If they
don’t like what’s on, they can switch to another channel, but they cannot freely select the content that
they want to watch nor the time at which they would like to watch it.

3. Independence Across Multiple Viewers

Oftentimes, if you have one cable TV connection, even if you have multiple TVs, the same content will
be shown across all of them. So only one person can decide on what channel to watch at a time.
However, if you opt for IPTV solutions in Sri Lanka, this limitation will not be there. Even with one
IPTV system, it can be set up such that each viewer can view their preferred content simultaneously.

4. Viewable Across Multiple Devices

With traditional TV, you are limited to watching the content on a designated TV. IPTV content,
however, can easily be watched across many devices from TVs to laptops, tablets and mobile
phones. Again, this makes its convenience factor a lot higher.

Why Would you Need IPTV Solutions in Sri Lanka?

Many businesses and organisations could benefit from investing in IPTV solutions in Sri Lanka. Let’s
take a hotel as an example.

Within a hotel, there is a multitude of guest rooms, each possessing a TV. Each guest, of course, will
want to watch different video content. With a hotel IPTV solution, this is not a problem. With just one
system, each guest will be able to choose what movies they want to watch and when, and be able to
replay parts of the movie as they like. They will also be able to stream the movie onto their tablets or
mobile phones if they find it more convenient to watch that way (if you set up your IPTV system to
allow this).

Furthermore, your hotel may have several digital screens or TVs stationed in common areas. Using
IPTV, you can use these TVs to display information like daily menu specials or daily events that are
taking place at the hotel.

So in essence, IPTV can come in handy when you want to distribute video and image content to your
staff or customers across your establishments.

IPTV Vs. MATV

To put it simply, IPTV is the newest kid on the block, when compared with MATV (Master Antenna
Television). It’s a more upgraded version since it swaps out reliance on terrestrial and satellite
communication channels in favour of internet communication channels.

For the end user, IPTV offers more convenient features such as VoD (Video on Demand), video
replay options and so on.

So if you want to equip your business with the latest tech, there’s no doubt that you would want to
invest in IPTV rather than MATV or SMATV (Single Master Antenna Television) systems.
